With a career spanning over 30 years, Matt has performed on some of the world’s most prestigious stages, collaborated with various musicians, and produced award-winning recordings. He’s been praised by the New York Times as a “ferociously talented cellist” and by The New Yorker as a “remarkable virtuoso.”
As a mentor, Matt has inspired a new generation of cellists at the Schulich School of Music of McGill University and is now the first-ever John Cage Fellow at The New School’s Mannes School of Music. He brings fresh perspectives to classic repertoire and creates innovative projects, such as THE PRIMAVERA PROJECT is an ongoing series of 81 commissions for cello, celebrating a rich tapestry of distinct and diverse compositional voices. A collaboration between GRAMMY-nominated cellist Matt Haimovitz, contemporary painter Charline von Heyl and director Jeffrianne Young, each composer is asked to respond to two paintings, Sandro Botticelli’s Primavera (c.1480) and Charline von Heyl’s Primavera 2020.
